When looking for coverage to supplement your original Medicare
coverage there is only one place to look, Medigap (or Medicare
Supplement Insurance) policies. These policies are designed to give
extra help and coverage to those that are concerned about having
enough coverage under their original Medicare policies. Here is a
basic understanding of what Medigap policies must cover under Federal
law.
First, insurance companies must make Plan A available if they are
going to sell Medigap policies at all. Medigap Plans C and F will
also have to be sold if the Medigap provider will be providing any
other insurance plans. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin have
some other rules so if you reside in those states you will need to
contact your state’s Department of Insurance.
Other notes of interest with Medigap may be that Plans D and G will
not be the same if yours originated before June 1, 2010 as they are if
you bought them after June 1, 2010. Also, Plans E, H, I, and J are no
longer sold but are available to those people that already had them as
long as they were never cancelled. This gives you a basic
understanding of what Medigap policies offer to you.
