Medicare, Medicare Supplements, and Healthcare are still overwhelming lawmakers, newsmakers and the rest of us. I know – it’s not an easy process, but I heard and read something the other day that infuriated me.
It was a comment on a newspaper blog – I read everything I can get my hands on. This particular woman saw nothing wrong with families not having insurance, medicaid or anything to fall back on in case of an accident, serious injury or serious ilness.
She felt that if someone could pay for a car or SUV and actually afford cable, they should be able to pay for insurance. This was her deduction. She didn’t give consideration to the fact that these individuals might not have the same budget now as they had before they bought their car.
If they happen to have an SUV, who knows what that deal is. Maybe their employer helps pay for it ad maybe they got it at the same payments a car would be. They have to get to work and I would prefer a vehicle that saves rather than guzzles gas but maybe the person has tools and equipment they have to schlep around. As for the cable, basic cable is about $20. That is not going to help them purchase health insurance.
I have been in that situation as a single mom with a used car, a son and cable. That’s our one thing we splurge on. I work a lot of hours to make sure my son is taken care of. My mother lives with me since she was in a bad accident. With all that happening, I do not quaify for Medicaid and my Mother doesn’t either – even by herself, even though her income is only $200.
So before people start assuming that everyone that wants Medicare, Medicare Supplements or Medicaid, they need to stop and think of all the issues causing this. If we were all short sighted
enough, we would end up with more people uninsured instead of less. So before we rush to judgement, those that have Medicaid, Medicare, Medicare Supplements or other types of insurance should be grateful because there are many of us who can’t get it and need it desperately – and have been trying to get it for a long time but have continually been denied.
Hopefully whatever the president and lawmakers come up with will cover more people not less.
