Medigap policies are the same as Medicare supplement insurance that covers you for the portion of insurance that is not covered by Medicare. Some parts of this coverage is regulated by the state as most insurance coverage other than basic Medicare is. With this in mind some states have requirements for Medigap policies and here are the requirements for Massachusetts:
• Inpatient Hospital Care: Covers the Medicare Part A coinsurance plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare coverage ends. This can be very beneficial to you if you are dealing with an inpatient type of situation in Massachusetts. Be sure to check that you are getting the right benefits for your insurance.
• Medical Costs: Covers the Medicare Part B coinsurance (generally 20% of the Medicare-approved amount) for you. This is great if you are already pinching pennies with the bank account the way it is.
• Blood: Covers the first 3 pints of blood each year so that you can get the medical procedures that you need. This may not seem like much but it is very beneficial when you need it.
• Part A Hospice coinsurance or copayment is also covered. This is very important when your loved one is having to get help from a social worker or nurse inside their own home.
