As we know, there are many seniors on medications that are quite expensive – too expensive for individuals on a very limited income. How do you choose between food and medication? Often the choice is that the medication has to work.
There have been studies recently that have shown that lower co-pays can help seniors by encouraging them and making it easier for them to get their medication. In response to these study results, United Healthcare’s Nevada’s Senior HMO has dramatically reduced the amount of co pays for medication for chronic conditions.
The new changes to the program will cost members up to $4.50 per month more for coverage, however it has already been shown to save individuals enrolled in it a sizeable amount of money on their medications, sometimes into the hundreds of dollars per month.
United Healthcare plans are available in many states and they have been trying to work on programs to help seniors on Medicare to be able to afford their medicine and to take it on a regular basis to keep their health stable. United Healthcare has been working on this pilot program to see how well it is received and whether it achieves its objective.
Since United Healthcare is available in numerous states, it would be a good idea to keep your eye on their plans for seniors, whether or not you are a Medicare beneficiary. If the pilot program in Nevada does well, it is probable that they will expand this type of program to other states where it would be cost effective and helpful to those covered by their senior plans.
