Medicare has been the center of a tremendous amount of controversy for quite a while. Through the Bush years the economy kept getting worse and worse to the point that billions of dollars in surplus turned into much more in deficit in two terms of the Bush administration.
Now we are a year into the Obama administration and lawmakers, as well as seniors and most of the rest of the country are still going back and forth regarding Healthcare reform, including Medicare.
This is not to blame President Obama – he inherited a huge mess – which is still pretty messy, and instead of people supporting him for working so hard to try and fix things as quickly as possible, he is greeted with a slew of roadblocks, blame and negativity.
Lawmakers continue to work on crafting new legislation to fix the budget and at the same time, fix Medicare and Healthcare. At the same time, they say that they can’t pass them without a few cuts. What does that mean in the wake of wars this country is paying for throughout the world. If we are talking about co-pays going up by a dollar or two, or one less doctor visit per year, Seniors won’t be happy, but they can struggle through the situation – the same as they are struggling now. However, if we are talking about destroying 1/3 of their benefits, that’s a totally different thing. Things are tight enough already.
While lawmakers are working on the healthcare and Medicare issues, Seniors are worried to death about what will happen to them. The waiting may b e just as difficult – or more difficult – than the changes themselves. Finalizing all the details and coming up with a plan by working together rather than bickering with each other along party lines would be the best solution so that seniors can move forward along with the rest of the country.
