When it comes to insurance there are certain times that the profession gets a bad name and has to deal with the consequences. However, there are some insurance companies that are the very reason why that bad name is out there and there are a few instances here to prove that. Here are a couple of illegal practices for you to be aware of when you are buying a Medigap policy.
Remember that Medicare is a Federal program, but Medigap is a private health insurance policy that must deal with Federal regulations. For this reason you should be aware that insurance companies cannot pressure you to buy a policy or to lie or mislead you into buying a policy. Preying on the sick and the elderly is a tactic that many shady business characters have gotten by on for years.
Unless you have shown an insurance company that you are cancelling another Medigap policy in writing an insurance company cannot attempt to sell you a second Medigap policy. There is no need to have two Medigap policies and it is strictly forbidden for insurance companies to attempt to sell you a second Medigap policy when they know you already have one. These aren’t the only illegal practices associated with selling Medigap policies, but they are very common.
