There are many options available to senior citizens as far as insurance is concerned. Having just Medicare is not enough when it comes to health insurance for seniors. It may not take care of all the costs. Supplemental insurance my be required as a result.

Medicare Part A and B are different and deal with different scenarios. Many are not aware of this. Hospice care, inpatient hospital visits and home health care are covered by Medicare Part A. Doctor’s appointments and outpatient hospital care are covered by Medicare Part B. Prescriptions are covered under Part D which is another supplemental form of insurance.

Medicare fraud is a loss to everyone except the perpetrators of the fraud. This results in depriving rightful patients of treatment; higher taxes and higher costs. What is OBRA Health Insurance? Never heard of it? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Most people I know have not heard of OBRA either. OBRA is an extension of COBRA for the disabled for a period of 11 months.

I was once under the impression that if I qualified for SSDI, I would automatically be eligible for Medicare. I was so wrong. After going through all the complex procedures to be eligible for SSDI, you get your first check after waiting for 5 months. You are then eligible for Medicare only after 2 years from the date of your first SSDI payment. That is a total or 24 +5 = 29 months of waiting.

Insurance companies that have an agreement with CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid) give out Medicare Advantage Plans. Individuals enrolled in the plan retain their Medicare. You can go back to the original Medicare program the month after cancelling the Medicare Advantage plan.

The plans cost nil or a negligible amount. However, many need Part B participation amount. The bulk of the plan is paid from tax money. Many people considered Medicare Advantage Plans HMO plans. This is partially true. There are PPO Medicare Advantage Plans as well.

All health care services needed in times of crisis are not covered by Medicare Insurance. For these gaps in health care insurance there is Medigap Insurance. It pays for some care not covered by the original Medicare program in addition to some of the original costs.
