It’s that time again. You know that this time of year is that confusing time when seniors have to choose what their Medigap, Medicare Supplement and/or Medicare Advantage will be for the next year.
Many seniors dread this time of year because it is hard to understand which is the right match and the right plan for them. It is also difficult to determine what plan will take care of their needs without breaking the bank. This is the time to find the coverage that Medicare doesn’t coverage to fill in the gaps.
It is important to know that Medigap policies usualy allow you to see whatever doctor you want to see. In fact, you are usually allowed to keep your own doctor. It is important to know that there are some supplements that only allow you to stay within their network, so you could have to choose one of their doctors instead of your own. Be careful to check to make sure that you choose the supplement that will cover your personal physician if that is important to you. If not, you will have to start over with a new doctor.
Since most plans in 2010 will be PPO’s and HMO’s, you will have to join a network. The decision has been made that all private fee for service plans will go by the wayside in 2010. Even though this is true, Medicare Advantage plans will still give you the coverage you need.
The reason for this is that all of the services that regular Medicare covers must be covered by Medicare Advantage. The only service not covered will be hospice care. Original Medicare covers hospice care whether or not you are in a Medicare Advantage plan.
If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, it will cover all of your Medicare Part A hospital coverage and Part B medical insurance coverage. They will also cover emergency and urgent care, as well. Most Medicare Advantage plans also cover prescription drugs, and often cover extras, such as coverage for vision, hearing, dental and even memberships to health clubs.
There are usually co-pays to deal with for doctor visits and for every hospitalization. It is not easy to figure out, so it is good to have someone who is qualified help you figure it all out.
Medicare Advantage can likely be an important part of your Medicare coverage. Don’t let the confusion stop you from determining what is the best plan for you and picking it out. In the long run it can help you, save you money and protect you.
